As part of the Department of Urology, New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Komansky Children’s Hospital, the Institute for Pediatric Urology provides management of all pediatric urologic issues in both male and female patients.

Our goal is to offer a caring environment for our patients and their families, where we can work together to develop the most effective and least invasive treatment to improve a child's health. Our specialty focuses on children from birth to 18 years of age, with particular emphasis on developmental issues affecting the kidneys, bladder, urethra, or genital tract. In many cases, we begin working with families before their baby is born, when urologic issues are identified on prenatal ultrasounds.

The Institute is an internationally recognized referral center for the treatment of children with specific urologic concerns, such as disorders of sexual development and cases where minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic procedures are desired. Our team of specialists has pioneered minimally invasive approaches to treating urinary reflux, ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJ), and varicocelectomy.

The Institute's integrated team of specialists offers comprehensive pediatric care and provides state-of-the-art techniques for preventing, correcting, or minimizing urologic disorders. Our physicians are skilled in minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. We are widely recognized as leaders in complex reconstructive surgery for abnormalities of the bladder, urethra, and genitalia.

As a major referral center, we treat children across the nation and from around the world and provide specialized clinical expertise in:

  • Genital abnormalities, including hypospadias, epispadias, and posterior urethral valves

  • Disorders of sexual development (incomplete or otherwise atypical development of the genital organs, including ambiguous genitalia)

  • Neurogenic bladder (lack of bladder control caused by damage to part of the nervous system)

  • Obstruction of urine flow from the kidneys including ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJ) , hydronephrosis, and hydroureter

  • Removal of a non-functioning kidney (nephrectomy)

  • Stone disease

  • Tumors of the kidney, bladder, vagina, and testes

  • Undescended testes (cryptorchidism )

  • Urinary reflux (vesicoureteral reflux)

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Varicoceles

  • Voiding dysfunction, including day and night wetting

  • Inguinal hernia and umbilical hernia

The facility for the Institute is designed to provide a compassionate and relaxed setting for children and families. The space consists of treatment rooms encompassing pediatric video urodynamics and biofeedback, allowing for patient privacy and a nurturing environment. Additional examination rooms, a patient waiting room with a play area, and space for the continuation of groundbreaking clinical and basic science research in pediatric urology are provided in the facility as well.

Our dedicated team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants contribute their expertise to help our young patients lead a normal and healthy childhood.
