Biographical Info

Sameer Malhotra, M.D., M.A., is the Medical Director of Informatics at the Physician Organization of Weill Cornell Medical College and is working on several projects in the realm of Medical Informatics pertaining to improvement of health care delivery and patient safety. Dr Malhotra is the director for development and analytics of Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) of the institutions outpatient electronic health record (EHR). Dr. Malhotra has an academic faculty appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences. His research focuses on clinical decision support, medication safety, adoption of interoperable health IT, integration of genomic data in EHRs and impact of Health information exchange (HIE) on patient care. His research and publications have focused on healthcare technology and quality of care.

Dr Malhotras' current research pertains to medications alerts and their optimization in the realms of patient safety and clinical relevance to physicians. He is also analyzing the effects on the volume of generic medication prescriptions as a result of user interface changes to the EHRs order entry section that were made under his guidance. He has been working on a CMS funded study on radiology decision support which aims at reducing health care cost and improving patient safety as it relates to ordering of imaging modalities such as CT and MRI scans.

Dr Malhotra cares for adult patients in the inpatient setting as an Internal Medicine Hospitalist.

In his current role at the POIS of Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr Malhotra is closely involved with the ongoing deployment and optimization of the Institutions Ambulatory medical record. He has key roles on several committees and work groups pertaining to the quality of healthcare delivery, decision support alerts, EHR usability, development of clinical case finding and ad hoc reporting tools for Physicians and optimization of interfaces with other institutional informational systems such as the Radiology Information System.

Dr. Malhotra attended medical school at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India and received his M.B., B.S. degree in 2003. He then pursued a Masters in Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, New York. He continued research at Columbia University on a National Library of Medicine (NLM) funded study for workflow analysis in the critical care setting, to create models that would allow development of patient safety protocols and decision support systems aimed at reducing incidence of medical errors. He then completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
