Rahul Sharma, M.D., M.B.A., FACEP
Dr. Rahul Sharma is a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician, an Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, and the Assistant Director for Operations in the Department of Emergency Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is also the Medical Director for over twenty Emergency Department Physician Assistants and the founding Program Director for the new Physician Assistant Residency in Emergency Medicine.
Following his graduation from the combined MD/MBA in Health Management Program at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Sharma completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at NYU/Bellevue Hospital in New York City, where he was named Chief Resident. As a resident at NYU/Bellevue Hospital, he received leadership awards from the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA).
Dr. Sharma is involved with all aspects of the day to day clinical operations of the Weill Cornell Emergency Department and sits on several departmental and institution wide administrative committees and patient care initiatives. Dr. Sharma was recently appointed to the American College of Emergency Physicians National Emergency Medicine Practice Committee and has served on two subcommittees. He has been reappointed to the committee for 2011-2012.
Over the last few years the Weill Cornell Emergency Department has seen several improvements in quality, patient care, and clinical operations through various patient centered care initiatives. This has resulted in significant improvements in patient satisfaction scores, ED throughput, and improved communication with the private physicians, consultants, and various clinical departments. Dr. Sharma's leadership positions in the Department of Emergency Medicine and at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center reflect his dedication to ensuring that our department provides the best possible care to our patients in a caring and timely fashion.
Dr. Sharma is a core faculty member for the New York-Presbyterian Emergency Medicine Residency and has served on the Education Committee and directed the Grand Rounds and Business in Medicine Programs for the Department of Emergency Medicine. He is the course director for the highly popular CME approved Emergency Medicine Review series program and has also served as the course director the last two years for the national course "Clinical Updates in Emergency Medicine for the Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner".
Dr. Sharma has a true passion for teaching and his commitment to the education of residents, students, and others is reflected in him being the recipient of two national teaching awards. In 2008, he received the EMRA National Excellence in Teaching Award, an award given to one faculty member in the country who has been an exceptional role model for residents. In 2010, Dr. Sharma was the recipient of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) National Faculty Teaching Award. Dr. Sharma has been an invited speaker nationally and internationally and has participated in several international and humanitarian projects in India, Guatemala, Jordan, Dubai, and the United Kingdom. Dr. Sharma has published several articles and chapters in various resources including Rosen's Emergency Medicine, Adam's Emergency Medicine, and emedicine.com.
