Personal Statement

Dr. Janna Gordon-Elliott, M.D., is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and Associate Attending Psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.  Dr. Gordon-Elliott has specialty training in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry that focuses on the care of individuals with co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions.  She currently serves as the attending psychiatrist on the Advanced Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Services, and is involved in a program to advance stepped, integrated models of behavioral healthcare within primary care services. 

As the recipient of the Nanette Laitman Entrepreneurship Education Scholar Award, she is designing and implementing Transition to Medicine, a longitudinal educational program addressing the well-being and professional development of medical students. In her faculty practice, she provides psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, with particular interests in women’s health, anxiety and depression, sports and performance psychiatry, and mental health in medical illness; she strives to learn about people’s difficulties and strengths in the context of their lives, and to offer care that encourages positive adaptation and enhanced well-being. Her scholarly activities concentrate on medical education, well-being, athlete health, exercise and eating in mental healthcare, and psychiatric issues in patients with chronic disease. 

 

Biographical Info

Dr. Gordon-Elliott earned her medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College in 2004. She completed her residency in Adult Psychiatry at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/WCM, serving as co-Chief Resident in 2009-10, and a fellowship in Consultation-Liaison (C-L) Psychiatry (Psychosomatic Medicine) at Columbia University Medical Center. On faculty at WCM since 2011, Dr. Gordon-Elliott is a former Chief of the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service. She has served as the transplant psychiatrist for the NYP Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Program, the Liver Disease and Transplantation Program, the Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Program, and she has provided psychiatric care within the WCM primary care program, and the WCM student mental health program.

She has been active as a teacher and supervisor of trainees, including medical students, physician assistant students, residents and fellows. She previously served as the WCM Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Student life, the Psychiatry Clerkship Director and Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry. and the Site Program Director for the C-L Psychiatry Fellowship of Memorial Sloan Kettering and NYP. She has contributed as a study clinician to NIH- and DoD-funded studies in the areas of grief and traumatic stress. Dr. Gordon-Elliott has published in areas of medical psychiatry, eating disorders, and psychiatric training and education. She is board certified in Adult Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. She has held leadership roles in local and national associations for Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. She participates as a reviewer for medical journals and has been the recipient of research and teaching awards.
