It was shortly after I arrived at Cornell to start my surgical internship in 1983 that Drs Wayne Isom and Karl Krieger came from NYU and began to rebuild the Cornell Cardiac Surgery Service. They immediately created an environment and a culture where, for over a quarter of a century, state of the art patient care, teaching, and the advancement of appropriate innovative techniques have been the foundation of what happens here every day. This is a place where we practice evidence based medicine, and we treat every patient like a member of our own family.
What is important here? Teamwork, commitment, effort, integrity, accountability, professionalism, service, excellence, and humility are all fibers that make up the character of the people I get to work with on a daily basis.
With a team of incredibly focused and dedicated nurses, anesthesiologists, medical and surgical sub-specialists, ancillary workers and administrators, we are able to take care of some of the sickest and highest risk patients in the world, and have some of the best outcomes. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have trained here, to be able to practice here, and to work alongside colleagues that I admire, look up to, and know that I can count on for help anytime, any day.

After graduating Suma Cum Laude in 1979 from The University of Connecticut with a degree in Chemistry, Dr. Ciaburri pursued his medical degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and graduated in 1983. He then completed his internship and residency in General Surgery in 1988, and his fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1990, here at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Ciaburri then served for nine years as a staff cardiothoracic surgeon and as Director of Cardiothoracic Intensive Care at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT where he played an instrumental role in building that service into a “Top 100” national cardiac program.
In 1999, Dr. Ciaburri was recruited to be the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery of a new start-up program at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Under his direction during the six years he was there, the Vassar program consistently posted outcomes that were among the best in New York State, with some of the lowest risk adjusted mortality rates for both coronary bypass, and valvular heart surgery. The Vassar program was ranked as a “Top 100” national program during the last two years of his tenure there.
After leaving Vassar, Dr. Ciaburri completed his MBA at Columbia University and has rejoined the staff here at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center as Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Ciaburri is highly committed to the provision of high-quality, state of the art, cost efficient care, to the teaching of surgical residents, fellows and medical students, and to the appropriate implementation of innovative new surgical technologies.
Dr. Ciaburri and his wife, Gail, live in Manhattan. Married for over twenty-five years, they are the proud parents of twins Ashley and DJ, and son Cole.
