Daniel Cherqui, M.D.

Dr. Daniel Cherqui is Professor and Chief of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is an internationally-renowned and highly experienced board-certified surgeon, having performed over 2,000 complex hepatobiliary and liver transplant procedures over the past two decades. He developed innovations in minimally invasive techniques in liver surgery and was the first to use laparoscopic techniques in living donor liver transplantation. Dr. Cherqui is an expert in the management of primary and secondary liver cancer. Under his leadership, the new liver program at NYP/Weill Cornell provides patients with state-of-the-art, personalized, multidisciplinary approach to their liver disease.

Dr. Cherqui's mission is to head the newly launched Weill Cornell Medical Center component of the NYPH Liver Transplantation Program, which expands upon the already existing program at NYPH-Columbia University Medical Center. This joint effort of the two campuses will provide this vital service to more patients needing liver transplants.

Dr. Cherqui also heads Weill Cornell's hepatobiliary surgery services. This entails the comprehensive surgical management of diseases of the liver and biliary tract, including management of liver tumors by resection. The main procedure is partial liver resection also called hepatectomy, which is made possible by the unique feature of the liver to regenerate. Dr. Cherqui pioneered laparoscopic liver resection for selected liver tumors, and minimally-invasive liver resection is a unique service and treatment option Dr. Cherqui brings to New York patients. He also contributed to innovative techniques in major resections that require open abdominal surgery.

In conjunction with liver transplantation, this new program offers the full range of available treatments and the one adapted to each individual case. This requires multidisciplinary management including surgeons, hepatologists, oncologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists and motivated nursing staff, all available at Weill Cornell Medical Center. Individualized treatment plans are formulated during multidisciplinary conferences where each patient's case is thoroughly reviewed and discussed to determine the best treatment option. Dr. Cherqui was selected in 2011-2012 by Castle Connolly as one of "America's Top Doctors."
