Jonathan Baruch Shammash, M.D.

My professional focus is on direct patient care and on the education of our Internal Medicine Residents in the outpatient environment. I value highly the longterm relationships I have built with my patients, and I try to focus

on continuous healthcare maintenance and prevention. I strive to give my patients up-to-date medical information and to assist them in making their healthcare decisions.

Dr. Shammash completed his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Pennsylvania. He stayed there for his Residency in Internal Medicine from 1992-1995 and then finished a one-year clinician-educator fellowship in General

Internal Medicine, during which he began clinical research studying the impact of beta-blocker use and discontinuation in vascular surgery patients. He also pursued further education directed toward teaching medical residents ambulatory care concepts and skills. Dr. Shammash joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1996 and practiced for one year with Penn Tower Internists. In July 1997 he joined the faculty and the Department of Medicine at Cornell University and began practicing with Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates.

Dr. Shammash has continued his research in perioperative beta-blocker use and studied how Internet-based resident evaluation methods might improve feedback in ambulatory residency education, leading to publications on both subjects. Dr. Shammash became Director of the General Medicine Consultation Service in July 1999. His clinical interests are in primary care and consultation medicine. He is an active participant in inpatient and ambulatory resident education. He also serves as Compliance Leader for the Department of Medicine, working with departmental staff to assist providers in improving their billing and coding practices.
