Jose Figueiro, MD is an Assistant Professor of Surgery (Transplantation) at Weill Cornell Medical College and an Assistant Attending Surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center.
His clinical expertise focuses on kidney and pancreas transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery and general surgery for organ failure patients. Dr. Figueiro is a highly experienced and renowned transplant surgeon whose main focus is on abdominal organ transplantation. He has performed over 900 kidney and 320 pancreas transplants in the last 6 years.
Dr. Figuerio's research interests include islet cell transplantation, new immune medication protocols and long-term minimizing immunosuppressive trials.
Dr. Figueiro was most recently on the faculty of Felicio Rocho Hospital, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where he established a new transplantation unit and created a unique concept of multidisciplinary pre and post-transplantation patient care.
Jose Figueiro, MD received his Medical Degree from Federal University School of Medicine, Brazil in 1993. After completing his general surgery residency program, he completed a clinical fellowship at Centre Hepato-Biliaire, Hopital Paul Brousse, Paris, France under the supervision of Hentri Bismuth and completed an Abdominal Organ Transplantation fellowship training at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami in 2000.
He has played a leadership role in the development of transplant activities in Brazil, as well as throughout South America. Dr. Figueiro pioneered pancreas transplantation in his region; helped reorganize the local Organ Procurement Organization; created the concept of utilizing Expanded Criteria Donors for kidney transplantation; and developed novel immune medication protocols. He also hosted surgeons from other Latin American countries in his center to be trained in pancreas transplantation.
Dr. Figueiro is an active member of several transplants societies in Latin America. He served in the Brazilian Government Pancreas Transplant committee and played a strong leadership role in surgical education. He has been recruited to Weill Cornell Medical College to focus on developing and expanding the Pancreas Transplantation program, as well as establishing a world-class hepato-biliary surgery center.
