Elizabeth Nilson, M.D.

Dr. Nilson is a specialist in general internal medicine in the faculty of the Division of Medical Ethics in the Department of Public Health, and the Division of General Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Nilson serves as an ethics consultant for the hospital, and her scholarly interests include medical ethics, patient safety, quality of care, and medical education. Dr. Nilson also functions as Associate Program Director for the Preventive Medicine training program. She is a practicing internist with particular interests in women’s health issues, travel medicine, and prevention.

Dr. Nilson earned a BA from Wesleyan University, and her MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She came to New York City for internship and residency at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where she also served as Assistant Chief Resident. She completed a Chief Resident year at NYU Downtown Hospital, where she remained in the faculty as Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and Director of Quality for the Department of Medicine. During this time she completed a Bioethics Certificate Program sponsored by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and then developed an active medical ethics consultation service for NYU Downtown Hospital.

In 2003, Dr. Nilson returned to New York Presbyterian Hospital to complete a fellowship in the General Preventive Medicine Residency Program of the Department of Public Health at the Weill Cornell Medical College. As part of this program, she completed an MPH degree from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.

Dr. Nilson's current research interests include the intersection of quality of care, clinical ethics consultations and medical errors.
